Kirk Cousins breaks silence on Falcons drafting Michael Penix Jr.: 'Lot of things you don’t control'
Brett Davis-USA TODAY Sports

On Tuesday, Kirk Cousins quashed rumors about having hard feelings about the Atlanta Falcons drafting Michael Penix Jr. The veteran quarterback claimed that he was ready to compete for the starting spot.

Cousins spoke for the first time after the two players finally wrapped a couple of training sessions together at the Falcons’ facility. The 35-year-old revealed that he was more focused on what he could control.

I think you're reminded again that there are things you control, and there's a lot of things you don't control. Let's deal in reality and recognize that fact, and then be a steward, not an owner. I just believe that I gotta steward what comes my way and control what I can control. Kirk Cousins said in conversation with ‘Bussin’ With The Boys’

The Falcons surprised many by giving Cousins a four-year $180 million deal earlier this year. However, they shocked the entire football fraternity by then drafting Michael Penix Jr. 8th overall in the draft.

The four-time Pro Bowler revealed a story from his time with the Minnesota Vikings when asked what he was doing during the draft. He had just finished playing golf when offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak called him.

Just wanna give you a heads up, we may draft a quarterback tonight. Klint Kubiak said per Cousins

Cousins had no choice but to go along with the Vikings’ wishes. He understood that ‘teams are always thinking about succession plans.’

Kirk Cousins revealed there’s no beef between him and Michael Penix Jr.

Despite Cam Newton’s concerns about the Falcons unintentionally trying to sabotage Cousins’ tenure even before it began, the four-time Pro Bowler reassured that there’s no ‘beef’ between him and Penix. They have far more pressing matters in their hands.

I don’t think there can be any [beef]…I don’t think it’s helpful. We are trying to win a Super Bowl, and it’s hard enough. Let’s all be on the same page and try and go win a Super Bowl. Kirk Cousins added

Well, he did not exactly endorse the Falcons taking Penix either. Right after the news went viral, Cousins’ agent released a statement saying that his client was unaware of the pick until the last moment.

So would he have not moved to Atlanta if he knew they would sign the former Washington quarterback? Cousins claimed he doesn’t believe in Hypotheticals.

I don’t really deal in hypotheticals [and], I think it’s a real privilege to play quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons. I’m trying to make good on the opportunity. Kirk Cousins said

Falcons head coach Raheem Morris insisted that Kirk Cousins is their starter and Penix will continue to grow under him.
